Protection for your eyesNational Pharmacies
UV radiation is always present. All year round, all day, in winter and summer, in sunny and even overcast conditions – even on cloudy days. Prolonged UV exposure also poses some serious health risks including your eyes. Constant exposure to UV rays can cause eye diseases such as cataracts, macular degeneration and accelerated ageing of the area surrounding the eyes.
We are surrounded by UV rays whenever we go outside and it’s a little known fact that buildings, water and sand reflect up to 85 % of radiation. UV radiation even penetrates the surface of the water, at a depth of one metre, UV-A radiation can still have an intensity of 75% and UV-B radiation an intensity of 50%.
UV can even penetrate your car windows. While most front windscreens provide UV protection, side and rear windows usually offer none and these untreated windows can let in up to 80% of UV-A radiation. Even tinted windshields aren’t an effective means of protection, because they only filter out around 40 % of UV-A radiation. But, there are many ways you can protect yourself from the UV rays surrounding you every day.
Clothing is a good form of sun protection for the outdoors. Together with a good quality pair of sunglasses and sun cream for your skin, you’ll enjoy effective, protection for your entire body.
When purchasing sunglasses, avoid lenses without UV protection. These can create even more damage than when you don’t wear sunglasses at all because they simply give the illusion of protecting your eyes. They reduce the amount of light penetrating through, leading the pupil to dilate.
As a result, light penetrates your eye in an even more damaging way. Not only should sunglasses offer UV protection: clear lenses should always be equipped with effective UV protection as well.
So, when you’re looking for new glasses, make sure to help protect your eyes by wearing high-quality sunglasses with full UV protection or clear or tinted glasses with full UV protection up to 400 nanometres.
National Pharmacies Optical stock UVProtect lenses from ZEISS which offer full UV protection in a clear lens.
