Cholesterol is a fatty substance that is required by your body and contained within your blood. The body produces some cholesterol naturally, and it can also be obtained from some foods. Your body needs cholesterol, but having high levels of cholesterol in your blood is a risk factor for heart disease. Testing your cholesterol levels regularly can assist in the prevention of a heart attack, or help you manage your condition with medication.
National Pharmacies can assist you with monitoring your cholesterol levels either at home or regularly in the pharmacy. Please speak with your pharmacist about how cholesterol testing can become easier for you.
Blood glucose monitoring
Blood glucose refers to sugar that is transported through the bloodstream to supply energy to all the cells in our bodies. The human body regulates blood glucose levels so that they are neither too high nor too low, which is necessary for our bodies to function. The key outcome of testing is to ensure that your blood glucose is within the prescribed levels or target range and having your blood glucose levels tested can help to determine if you are at risk of diabetes. If you have diabetes, regular blood glucose monitoring helps you to understand your blood glucose levels and how to balance food intake with lifestyle, activity and medication to help manage glucose blood levels.
In-store blood glucose testing is conducted in a private consulting room by one of our trained employees. Please speak with your National Pharmacies pharmacist to discuss how regular blood glucose testing can benefit you.
Blood pressure monitoring
Blood pressure refers to the pressure of your blood on the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps your blood around your body. Blood pressure is associated with the health of your heart, vascular and circulatory systems.
You should have your blood pressure checked regularly to determine if you have high, low or normal readings.
Speak to your National Pharmacies pharmacist about healthy blood pressure readings today and how getting a regular blood pressure test can benefit your long-term health.
Bowel screen test kits
Bowel cancer (or colorectal cancer) is the second largest cancer killer of Australians after lung cancer. In 90 per cent of cases if detected early enough, this cancer can be treated successfully. In the early stages of bowel cancer there are no symptoms, so the best way to detect bowel cancer is through screening.
A bowel cancer screening test called a Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) can detect small amounts of blood (not the cancer itself) in bowel movements. It is recommended that all Australians from the age of 50 (in particular those with a family history of bowel cancer) take the test every 2 years.
These tests are available from National Pharmacies and are easy, convenient to use and can be done in the privacy of your own home. The cost of postage to the pathology laboratory is also included. After the test has been analysed, you and your nominated GP will receive a report detailing the test results and any actions required.
