Vitamins

Vitamin intake is essential for our health and wellbeing and sometimes you may not be getting enough from your diet alone. Your National Pharmacies Pharmacist or Naturopath can help you to find the right vitamins for you and your family. Herbs of Gold shares some insights into vitamins from Cranberry to Zinc.

CRANBERRY
About Cranberry.

Cranberry is produced from the berry fruit of the North American evergreen shrub Vaccinium macrocarpon. Cranberry fruit contains proanthocyanins, active constituents that help prevent bacteria from adhering to the cell wall of the urinary tract.

Why is Cranberry useful?
Cranberry can be beneficial in supporting urinary tract health and can help reduce the occurrence of medically diagnosed cystitis. Cystitis is inflammation of the bladder that is often accompanied by uncomfortable symptoms such as a frequent need to urinate or burning on urination.

What you should know about Cranberry.
Not only are Cranberries great antioxidants, they’re also an excellent source of Vitamin C, containing 14 mg of Vitamin C per 100g.

An interesting fact about Cranberry.
While commercial cultivation of Cranberry began in the 1800s, Cranberry was used as far back as the 1600s by sailors as a source of Vitamin C to help prevent scurvy.

ZINC
About Zinc.

Zinc is an essential nutrient, meaning our body can’t produce it, so it must be consumed in the diet. While Zinc is available in plant-based foods, it is more difficult to absorb from these foods, putting vegans and vegetarians at greater risk of low Zinc levels.

Why is Zinc useful?
Zinc is important for a diverse range of body functions including immune health, connective tissue health, supporting healthy skin and wound healing. Zinc also plays a critical role in male reproductive health, supporting prostate and sperm health.

What you should know about Zinc.
In addition to being a powerful antioxidant, Zinc is also a necessary mineral to support taste sensation – so if food isn’t tasting quite amazing as it should – think Zinc!

An interesting fact about Zinc.
Oysters contain more Zinc per serve than any other food. In fact, just 2 oysters provide just over the recommended dietary intake of Zinc for the day!

MAGENSIUM
About Magnesium.

Magnesium is a mineral responsible for over 600 enzyme reactions in the body – as such Magnesium plays an essential role in human health.

Why is Magnesium useful?
The uses of Magnesium in the body are wide and varied. Magnesium supports muscle health and function, healthy muscle contraction function, heart and bone health, nervous system health and energy production, while also supporting a healthy stress response in the body.

What you should know about Magnesium.
Magnesium is found in green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, cacao. Modern dietary practices, such as cooking and bleaching grains, causes a loss of up to 80% of Magnesium content.

An interesting fact about Magnesium.
Under normal dietary conditions, only around 30% of ingested Magnesium is actually absorbed in the body!

ACTIVATED BS
About Activated Bs.

B Vitamins undergo an activation process in the body. Taking an already activated form of a B vitamin bypasses these steps which can be slow and difficult for some.

Why are Activated Bs useful?
Activated B vitamins provide a more active form of a B vitamin, making them immediately available for use in the body. As B vitamins are predominantly not store in the body, this improvement in availability can be beneficial. B vitamins support energy production and a healthy stress response in the body.

What you should know about Activated Bs.
Activation of a B vitamin requires a range of coenzymes and cofactors as well as good digestive and liver function. So many variables can make conversion in the body more difficult for some individuals.

An interesting fact about Activated Bs.
Not all B vitamins are available or needed in their active forms. Activated B1 is not available as an ingredient in Australia and Vitamin B5 is readily converted by the body, making the activated form not necessary.

Always read the label. Use only as directed. If symptoms persist, see your healthcare professional. Vitamin and minerals supplements should not replace a balanced diet.
